"Music is a malleable material, full of subjectivity and endless emotional attachments. And where some see melody and choruses as the height of musical perfection, others see the dissolution of accepted forms as the true measure of sound and its applicable relationships. For Subroutine (the duo of Robin Hayward and Morten J. Olsen), music is simply the aural resonance that conjures emotional associations, and through their weird and ecstatic use of a rotating bass drum and microtonal tuba, they fashion a delirious, uncategorizable mass of noise that renders most descriptions immediately invalid. Their work is subtle, soft and manic all at once, a true reflection of their collective inspirations.

On their new cassette, "Head Crash," Hayward and Olsen explore a dark and illusory classicism, a vague and ill-defined area where classical music, drone and abstract composition meet and react in unpredictable ways. These three songs are less about the tangible nature of music and more about the underlying foundation upon which they're built. Subtle drones weave in and out of the cautious rhythms that sink slowly through the empty spaces that litter these landscapes. Atypical and arrhythmic in their resolution, these tracks skulk and stutter, evincing a menace in their abandoned musical formality."
